Tread for Bread Day Sustainability Hike @ Waimea Valley

Visit Waimea Valley and step into the past to discover and learn the keys to Hawaii's sustainable future.

Aloha,

Climb to the top of Kalahe'e Ridge, following a switchback trail through a mixed forest of exotic and native plants with a fair incline, and experience the spectacular views of Waimea Bay and Mokuleia. This special guided hike will also feature an explanation of how Hawaiians were sustainable in their use of various plants in their everyday life!



1) The Day of the Hike - Saturday, January 23rd

Where to be:

  • Waimea Valley (across from Waimea Bay on the North Shore of O`ahu
    59-864 Kamehameha Hwy. Hale`iwa HI 96712 (Approximately 5 miles NE of Hale`iwa Town)

When:

  • 1:00pm Saturday afternoon to get ready (ie. waivers, restroom, etc..)
  • Hike starts promptly at 1:30pm
  • Running late or lost? Please call (808) 638-7766
  • FYI: Most cellular phones do not work in Waimea Valley

Distance:

  • 3 miles roundtrip at moderate to easy pace.
  • 2.5-3 hours
  • Includes rest stops for pictures of the bay and Mokuleia

2) Bad Weather

  • We DO hike in the rain (We may choose to hike another trail of equal or lesser difficulty if the conditions dictate)
  • If the weather is too extreme for hiking we shall cancel the hike no later than 7:30am on the day of the hike. We monitor the weather and you shall be notified by phone and email well before leaving your home or hotel. Please check your messages before leaving home.
  • You will NOT be charged for this cancellation.
  • You will NOT be contacted if the hike is ON!

3) Hiker Preparedness

  • Hikers are REQUIRED to wear closed-toed shoes (Crocs are not adequate)
  • NO CLOSED-TOED SHOES = NO HIKING = NO REFUND
  • Hikers are expected to bring water, a snack, sunscreen, hat, rain jacket, insect repellent, and a camera.
  • Our Gift Shop, Ku`ono Waiwai, does carry all of the items above EXCEPT for hiking shoes.

4) Minimum Participants

  • There is a minimum of 5 participants for the hike to proceed.
  • If the minimum has not been met by 5pm on the Friday before the hike, you shall be notified by phone and email.
  • You will NOT be charged for this cancellation.

5) Hiker Cancellation

  • You must cancel your hiking reservation by 10am Friday morning (the day before the hike)
  • "No Shows” and late cancellations will be charged for the hike

6) Age Requirements

  • No one under the age of 7 shall be permitted to hike on the Family Hikes
  • No one under the age of 12 shall be permitted to hike on Regular (non-family) Hikes
  • Any minors between the ages above and 16 shall have to be accompanied by an adult.

7) Hiking Fee

  • This special sustainability hike is part of the Tread for Bread Day festivities and we are offering a discounted hike price of $5.
